Attempt = D has engaged in conduct for the specific purpose of perpetrating a crime + has taken substantial step beyond mere preparation.

• Be very careful of attempt on the MBE. Watch where someone will be charged for "Attempted murder" or "Attempted rape."

• Attempt merges with the substantive offense, so someone cannot be charged with both attempt and murder, but they may be charged with attempted murder.
