Criminal Law: Essential Elements of a Crime: Mental States

There are 4 criminal mental states:

• Specific Intent Crimes -- subjective intent to cause to proscribed result

• Malice Crimes -- reckless disregard of a high/obvious risk that harm will occur

• General Intent Crimes -- general awareness of factors constituting a crime

• Strict Liability Offenses -- no intent; malum prohibitum crimes
